Wine is part of tradition and culture of Uruguay, and its production reflects how our society was transformed in the XIX century. Uruguay is a natural open country to the world, and people from different places have settled in Uruguay and developed their lives in the country. Most of those immigrants came from Europe, mostly from Italy and Spain, but also from France, Switzerland, Germany and so on, with a tremendous impact on the agricultural, industrial, and cultural production, by making fusion among each other, and with the local people as well.

One of those traditions was the wine production, particularly the production of Tanat. It was introduced by Pascual Harriage in 1870, and it found the ideal conditions to grow and develop in Uruguay .

The Ideal Conditions to Produce Wine

Uruguay has an ideal geographic location for wine production, as it is located in the most productive latitude for winemaking, the same as South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, and with part of the territory at the same latitude as Chile or Mendoza of Argentina.

The climate conditions are excellent to wine production, with 4 distinct seasons and no extreme weather. The quality of the calcareous soils and the proximity with the Atlantic oceans allow Uruguay to produce high-quality grapes.

Uruguay produces red and white wines, and though red wines are the most recognized ones, the whites are constantly winning reputation in the Uruguay wine production and export as well. 49% of red Uruguay wines are Tanat, 19% are Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Uruguay also produces other varieties such us Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir.

Nowadays, Uruguay grew and produced in small volumes by passionate winemaking families and there are more than 190 wineries in the country, and more than 9 million kilos of grapes are harvested each year. Year by year Uruguay wines are reaching the highest position in different international contests, and Uruguay wines are exported to more and more countries.

Uruguay is the first country in the world to have the 100% geographical recognition, and with an integrated system of traceability and information, consumers are able to know exactly the whole information about the wine. We would like to say that Uruguay wine production is the greatest example in where traditions met the new world technology, and as a result, we have this strong personality wines reaching the highest standards of quality.

Acting Consul General of Uruguay in Guangzhou

Fernandez Guerra Facundo Simón

Fernandez Guerra Facundo Simón, Acting Consul General of Uruguay in Guangzhou stated: “To the Consulate General of Uruguay in Guangzhou – with jurisdiction in all the south of China, having the possibility of promoting Uruguayan wines in such a relevant environment is a great challenge and opportunity. We are aware of how important the Greater Bay Area is to import products, and how dynamic trade and trends are in this zone.

Because of that, being present at Shenzhen, in a fair that looks carefully towards this zone and towards this business environment makes total sense with what we are promoting. We hope this first participation helps us to show why Uruguayan wines are unique, and what is that makes our wines special.”
